In 2012, I wanted to start sharing my travel experiences with others—and to get this overwhelming case of thought vomit out of my head and out into the universe. I’m happy to say I accomplished both and am no longer talking to ghosts.
Welcome. My name is Jaimee. I’m passionate about exploring the world and inspiring others to live an intentional life marinated in authenticity and happiness.
This Way North is where I share my adventures, musings on personal growth and development, life and other things I’m both learning and struggling with along my journey.
I grew up in Mableton, Georgia, a suburban area small enough that if you blink, you just might miss it. But these days I’ve got my eyes wide on the world and my hands rooted firmly on the ground—because yoga and handstands are happening everywhere (which btw, I’m officially a certified yoga instructor now, specializing in vinyasa flow to some good music).
Whether I’m hosteling around a foreign country or eating my way through
Houston Atlanta where I currently reside—the thrill of exploration keeps me up at night.
After studying English at Spelman College (inserts link for generous donor to grant me student loan debt forgiveness), I headed to Texas and soon realized there was more to life than climbing the corporate ladder. Sitting in stuffy offices under fluorescent lights turned out not to be my jam, and so I started squeezing out every ounce of paid vacation I could, to escape and explore the world.
For my first experience abroad–and 26th birthday–I jetted off to Spain on a solo mission, and my insatiable appetite for travel—and paella—hasn’t eased up since. I eventually wrote an ebook about traveling alone. I’ve couch surfed in Amsterdam, gone green for St. Patrick’s Day in Dublin, downward-dogged my way through Bali and taken way too many photos of pretty doors. On the contrary, I’ve also been robbed at gunpoint on a backpacking trip in Colombia which taught me some painful, yet valuable lessons.
I believe in running away from comfort zones and diving head first into passion and purpose. Making mistakes is okay and getting it right is rewarding. I believe balance is key, and I’ve got a green smoothie in one hand, with a glass of champagne in the other. I crave stillness and excitement: quiet mornings of journaling and savasana, and exhilarating afternoons of flying through different time zones. I like to be everywhere often and nowhere when necessary. Planning and going with the flow both irritate and excite me, but I need both to keep me sane. I’m not a full-time traveler (yet), but I’m on a full-time mission of living a life I love, juggling all the things I’m passionate about, and figuring out why people sitting in the last row always jump up first when the plane lands.
I just really need to know why.
Okay: digression. focus.
My hope for you, the reader, is resonance. I hope as you read one or maybe every post, you’ll feel empowered to begin or continue your own adventures of both exploring the world around you and the power you have within you.
My greatest hope is that you never, ever stop exploring.
Life is chaotic and calm: confusing and simple: and bittersweet at times. But through it all, it’s the most precious gift we have.
So, this is the part where we raise our glasses and ‘cheers’ now.
